Watching the fireworks at the Paralympics closing ceremony in Beijing tonight reminded me of that amazing display which opened the Olympics back in August. 'How did they get those fireworks to explode simultaneously right across the skyline?' someone asked me. The truth turned out to be rather different to my hi-tec explanation. They were superimposed by China's TV bosses in order to maximise the spectacle. It made me wonder if the perfectly interlocking Olympic rings, also created in fireworks, was another piece of Chinese trickery. However I'm reliably told these effects were perfected in the United States where they are also working on putting microchips in shells which can be detonated by radio. Maybe by 2012 those perfectly synchronised starbursts will be the real thing. Let's hope they're ours!
